The airport transfer is the first and last part of your holiday, and it's the part people think about least. Here's how the main options compare, so you can pick the right one for your group before you fly.
The options compared

|---|---|---|---|---|
| How it's priced | Often included, or per person | Per person | Per vehicle | Meter or fixed fare |
| Stops | Several hotels | Several hotels | Direct | Direct |
| Waiting at the airport | Possible | Possible | Driver waits for you | Depends on the queue |
| Flight tracking | Via the operator | Varies | Usually | No |
| Child seats | Rarely | Rarely | Often on request | Rarely |
| Return pick-up time | Set by the operator | Set by the provider | You choose | You arrange it |
| Best for | Included packages, budget | Solo travellers and couples | Families, groups, late arrivals | Back-up option |
Best for families: private transfer
With young children, the time saved by going straight to the hotel matters most at the end of a long travel day. Because you pay per vehicle, a family of four or more often finds the gap with the per-person shuttle price smaller than expected. Request child seats and confirm them in writing.
Best for couples on a budget: the included coach or a shared shuttle
If your package includes a coach, it's usually fine for couples who don't mind a few extra stops. If it doesn't, compare your operator's add-on with an independent shared shuttle and a private car. Sometimes the difference is small.
Best for groups: a private minibus
For six or more people, a private minibus can work out at a similar cost per person to a shared shuttle, and everyone travels together with their luggage.
Late-night arrivals and reduced mobility
Pre-book, whatever you choose. For reduced mobility, look for providers offering adapted vehicles and say exactly what you need when you book. Some tour operators also offer wheelchair-adapted transfers as an add-on.
Thinking of hiring a car instead?
If you plan several independent day trips, a hire car collected at the airport can replace the transfer. Compare the total cost, including insurance excess, fuel and hotel parking, with a transfer plus organised tours.
FAQs
Is a private transfer worth it for a family?
Often, yes. Private transfers are priced per vehicle, so the cost per person falls as your group grows. They go straight to your hotel without other stops, which helps with tired children. Compare the price with your tour operator's transfer add-on.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Most private transfer companies track your flight and adjust the pick-up time. Check the waiting-time policy when you book. Shared coach transfers run on the operator's schedule, so contact your rep or the operator's app if you are delayed.
Can I get child seats on an airport transfer?
Many private transfer companies let you request child seats when you book. Shared coaches usually do not provide them. Always confirm in writing before you travel.
