Most UK package holidays to Tenerife go to the sunny south-west coast: Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje, which run into each other along one stretch of seafront. The good news is that the airport is close. Here is what's left to sort: the transfer, which part of the strip you're in, Teide permits, day trips, data, and what your hotel photos won't show.
Which resort area suits you
| Area | What it's like | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Los Cristianos | A real town around a port, with ferries to La Gomera, a flatter seafront and the Playa de las Vistas beach | Couples, families and older travellers who want flat walks |
| Playa de las Américas | The busiest area, with bars, restaurants and the main nightlife strip | Groups and nightlife-seekers. Families should choose their hotel's position carefully. |
| Costa Adeje (San Eugenio, Torviscas, Fañabé, Playa del Duque) | Generally more upmarket, with big resort hotels, shopping and a long promenade | Families and couples |
| La Caleta | A quieter former fishing village at the north end, with seafood restaurants | Couples and anyone wanting a calmer base |
Getting from Tenerife South Airport
Fly into Tenerife South (TFS), not Tenerife North (TFN), for these resorts. Jet2 flies to TFS and says the airport has only one terminal. Our calculated route to Playa de las Américas is about 20 km, roughly 20 minutes along the TF-1 motorway with no traffic. Shared coaches add time for hotel stops. The public TITSA line 40 bus runs from the airport to Los Cristianos and Estación Costa Adeje, about every 30 minutes in the daytime, and takes around 40 minutes end to end (TITSA).
Tenerife South Airport (TFS) to Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje
20 km, about 20 min free-flow (approximate). One of the shortest big-resort transfers. TITSA bus 40 runs from the terminal to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje.

Approximate route: 20 km by road from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) terminal to Playa de las Américas. The calculated free-flow drive time is about 20 minutes. That is an estimate with no traffic, so allow longer. It is a short motorway drive along the TF-1. TITSA line 40 is timetabled at about 40 minutes from the airport to Estación Costa Adeje, via Los Cristianos (TITSA). Shared coaches stop at several hotels, so allow longer.
Towns along the way: Las Chafiras (~7 km, on the route), Guaza (~12 km, on the route), Los Cristianos (~19 km, on the route). Almost all of the route is the TF-1 motorway. We have not mapped individual service stations.

The best day trips
Mount Teide: cable car or summit permit
Teide National Park is the island's big day out. The cable car is ticketed separately, so book ahead in peak season. Walking the final Telesforo Bravo trail (PNT 10) to the summit needs a permit booked in advance. Since 19 January 2026, the Cabildo de Tenerife has charged non-residents for trails 10 and 7: €15 for a daytime slot on the summit trail, according to the Cabildo. Many tours include cable car tickets but not the summit permit, so check.
Whale and dolphin watching
Boat trips leave from Los Cristianos and Puerto Colón (Costa Adeje). Choose licensed operators, read recent reviews, and check whether the trip includes a swim stop and food.
Siam Park, Loro Parque, Masca and La Gomera
Siam Park water park is in Costa Adeje, close to most hotels. Loro Parque is in Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast, a longer trip, often by tour coach. Masca village and the Los Gigantes cliffs are spectacular west-coast trips. La Gomera is a ferry ride from Los Cristianos, so take your passport.
Money, phone, health and emergencies
- Money: euro. Tipping isn't compulsory. Rounding up or leaving a little for good service is common. If a card machine offers pounds, choose euros.
- Phone: Tenerife is in Spain. Many UK networks include it in their Europe roaming add-ons, but daily charges vary, so check. An eSIM is an alternative.
- Health: your UK GHIC, or a valid EHIC, covers medically necessary state healthcare (NHS). You still need travel insurance.
- Emergency number: 112 (GOV.UK).
- Entry: Schengen passport rules apply (issued less than 10 years before you arrive, and valid 3 months after you leave). EES biometrics may be taken at the border. ETIAS isn't open yet, so don't pay anyone for it (GOV.UK, October 2026).
- Tourist tax: Tenerife has no overnight tourist tax at the time of writing.
What the hotel photos don't show you: south Tenerife checklist
- "Alto" means uphill. Areas such as San Eugenio Alto and Torviscas Alto are up the hillside from the beach. The views are great, but it can be a steep walk back. Check the street view if you have a pushchair or limited mobility.
- How close are you to the nightlife strip? Playa de las Américas' busiest bar area is loud late at night. Check reviews for "noise".
- Beach sand. Many natural beaches are dark volcanic sand or shingle. Some resort beaches have lighter sand added. Check photos of your nearest beach, not just the hotel pool.
- Motorway and building work. Some uphill hotels sit near the TF-1, and the area has ongoing development. Search recent reviews for "construction" and "road".
- Calima and wind. Occasional dusty, hazy days and breezy afternoons happen on the Canaries. A sheltered pool area helps.
- "Sea view" vs "ocean view across the road". Check which room type you've booked, and whether a promenade or road separates you from the sea.
