Dalaman Airport serves two of Turkey's best-loved UK package areas: Marmaris (with İçmeler and Turunç) to the west, and Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü to the east. They're in opposite directions from the airport, and the transfers are long, so it really matters which one you're in. This companion covers the transfer, who each resort suits, day trips, money and data, and the things hotel photos leave out.
Which resort suits you
| Area | What it's like | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Marmaris | A big, busy resort town with a marina, a bazaar, a long seafront and a famous bar street | Groups, nightlife-seekers, and anyone who wants plenty of choice on the doorstep |
| İçmeler | A separate bay west of Marmaris, generally calmer, linked by the seafront path and water taxis | Families and couples |
| Turunç | A small, quiet bay over the hill from İçmeler | Couples and anyone wanting peace |
| Fethiye and Çalış | A working harbour town with a fish market, and Çalış beach to the north, known for sunsets | Couples, families and independent explorers |
| Ölüdeniz | Beachfront resort beside the Blue Lagoon, with paragliders landing on the beach | Families and couples who want to be on the beach |
| Hisarönü and Ovacık | Hillside resorts above Ölüdeniz. Hisarönü is lively at night | Groups and budget-conscious families happy to bus down to the beach |
Getting from Dalaman Airport
UK flights use Dalaman's International Terminal. Jet2 says all its Dalaman flights depart from it. Tour operator reps and private drivers meet you outside arrivals, as your voucher says. The airport says Havaş and Muttaş shuttle buses leave from the airport parking area for Marmaris bus station (via Ortaca, Köyceğiz and Gökova) and Fethiye bus station (via Göcek). Taxis are run by the Dalaman Airport Taxi Cooperative.
- To Marmaris: about 95 km on our calculated route, roughly 85 minutes with no traffic.
- To Ölüdeniz: about 65 km, roughly 70 minutes, via Göcek, Fethiye and up through Ovacık and Hisarönü.

The best day trips
Dalyan: river boats, rock tombs, mud baths and turtle beach
Dalyan, between the two areas, is a classic day trip. A river boat passes the Lycian rock tombs above the river, and trips usually include the mud baths and İztuzu beach. İztuzu is a protected loggerhead turtle nesting beach, and during the nesting season it is closed to visitors from 20:00 to 08:00 (Muğla Directorate of Culture and Tourism).
From Fethiye and Ölüdeniz
Popular trips include tandem paragliding from Babadağ, which lands on Ölüdeniz beach, boat trips to Butterfly Valley and the bays, Saklıkent Gorge, the abandoned village of Kayaköy, and Fethiye's "12 islands" boat trips. The Blue Lagoon is a nature park with an entry charge. Turkish press reported 150 TL per person on foot in 2026, but check at the gate. The main Belcekız beach is public.
From Marmaris
Boat trips around the bays, jeep safaris into the hills, and seasonal ferries to the Greek island of Rhodes. Greece is in the Schengen area, so take your passport, check Schengen passport rules and expect EES checks.
Money, phone, health and emergencies
- Money: Turkish lira. Keep cash in lira for dolmuş minibuses, markets and optional tips. Tipping isn't compulsory, but leaving a little for good service is common. If a card machine offers pounds, choose lira.
- Accommodation tax: Turkey charges an accommodation tax on overnight stays, cut from 2% to 1% for 1 May to 31 December 2026 (Turkish Revenue Administration guidance). It's normally built into the hotel price rather than charged separately.
- Phone: Turkey is outside UK networks' EU roaming deals and often costs more. Check your rates or install an eSIM before you fly. See our eSIM guide.
- Health: the UK GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Turkey. Travel insurance with medical cover is essential. See our general insurance guide (information, not advice).
- Emergency number: 112 (GOV.UK).
- Entry: full British citizen passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 150 days from arrival (GOV.UK).
What the hotel photos don't show you: Dalaman coast checklist
- Hisarönü and Ovacık are on a hill. They're not on the beach. Ölüdeniz is down the hill, reached by dolmuş, taxi or a downhill walk, and the walk back is uphill. Check how far your hotel is from the main road and the dolmuş stop.
- Hisarönü's bar area is lively. Hotels close to the main strip can hear music late at night. Check reviews for "noise".
- Marmaris Bar Street. The nightlife area near the harbour is loud late into the night. If you want quiet, check your distance from it, or look at İçmeler or Turunç.
- Armutalan and some Siteler hotels are set back from the sea. "Marmaris" doesn't always mean beachfront. Check whether there's a road to cross and how far the walk is.
- Beaches are often shingle or pebble. Ölüdeniz beach has a lot of pebble, and Çalış is long and can be breezy in the afternoons. Water shoes help.
- Turunç's road. It's reached by a winding hill road, which is worth knowing if you get travel-sick. Water taxis also run in season.
- Transfer time from the airport. Marmaris and Ölüdeniz are among the longer UK package transfers. If your hotel is near the end of the coach route, consider a private transfer.
